MEET THE ARTISTS

Byungwoo Kim
baritone


Korean baritone, Byungwoo Kim recently returned from the Intermezzo Opera where he performed Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro.
Last year, Mu. Kim participated in Tanglewood Music Center where he performed the role of Cat in Renard (by Stravinsky)that was broadcast live nation-wide on WQXR. Operatic performances to his credit also include Germont in La Traviata. Count in Le Nozze di Figaro, Harlekin in Aridne auf Naxos. Figaro in Le Barbiere di Siviglia and Marcello in La Boheme. Mr. Kim is also a very sensitive and accomplished lieder singer.
Oratorio performances to his credit include soloist appearances in Messiah by Handel. Creation by Haydn and Elijah by Mendelssohn.
He is a winner of numerous awards including the Mario Lanza Competition, Sullivan Foundation, finalist in the Metropolitan National Councel Eastern Region, Michael Sisca Opera Award from the Mannes College of Music and a Merit Scholarship from the Manhattan School of Music.
He received his Bachelor of Music degree from Kei Myung University in his home town Daegu, Korea, a master degree from The Manhattan School of Music and Professional Study degree from the Mannes College of Music and now he is pursuing a DMA at the University of Hartford.
He has studied with Theodor Uppman. Ruth Falcon and Mitchelle Piper.

Hyunjee Kim
soprano

Started as a Mezzo Soprano, developed and gained experiences during the years. Ms. Kim, a native of Busan Korea, has won the third prize in the Metropolitan National Council Audition 2003 Eastern Region and obtained New York State Assembly Citation Women in History Artist Award in 2002.
As she was a Mezzo Soprano, she performed Mrs. Grose in The Turn of the Screw at the Juilliard opera productin in 2003, Mrs. Herring in Albert Herring at the Juilliard opera workshop in 2001, opera scenes such as Charlotte in Werther, Mistress Quickly in Falstaff at The Juilliard School, Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro., Dorabella in Cosi fan Tutte at Wheller Opera House in Aspen, 3rd lady in Magic Flute, Fidalma in II matrimonio segreto at Mannes and Margheritta in Louise at Kaye Playhouse in NY. She also has apperared as a soloist in Gloria (Vivaldi) and Messiah (Handel).
She has been heard in numerous concerts and recitals throughout Korea and New York in major halls including Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Juilliard Paul Hall, Busan Cultural Center Medium Hall.
She has participated in master classes with Fedora Barbieri, Phyllis Curtin, and Regina Resalk.
She graduated Juilliard pre-college and she holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Mannes College of Music and recently obtained Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School. Currently, she is in the Professional Studies program at Mannes under Ruth Falcon. She also has studied with Beverly Peck Johnson. Marlena Malas, Stephen Smith, Beth Roberts and Lorraine Nubar.

Israel Gursky
pianist

Pianist Israel Gursky is and accomplished pianist as both a soloist and in collaboration with other artists. As soloist, Mr. Gursky has performed with the Haifa Symphony, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, and the International Youth Orchestra of the Verbier Festival. He has served on the Music staff of the Washington Opera, The Wolf Trap Opera, and the San Francisco Opera Center,. In the past four years, he has been the official accompanist for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in New York and the northeast region. He is also an official pianist for the Francisco Vinas competition in Barcelona. In recital, he has accompanied renowned soprano Anna Tomowa-Sintow. Las year he made his debut on the Wings of Song recital series, hosted by Marilyn Horn, and broadcast on WQXR, New York. He has frequently performed with acclaimed tenor Paul Sperry in recitals throughout the USA. For the past three years, he has accompanied the winners of the Joy in Singing competition in their New York debut recitals at Merkin Concert Hall.
In 1999, Mr. Gursky won the best pianist award in the Poulenc competition in New York City. As a result, he performed in the Poulenc centennial celebration at the 92nd street Y. Israel is a graduate of the Rubin Music Academy in Tel Aviv, the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he completed his D.M.A., and the Manhattan School of Music. His teachers have included Arie Vardi, Gilbert Kalish and Thomas Muraco. He was a recipient of America-Israel Cultural Foundation scholarships between 1985-1997
